Two antic-punks - the perfromers - are already on stage. They are the decadent actors of the concert, singing the Ovide Metomorphosis adapted lyrics, but also the preachers of a new divinity (the spectator). The public attends both sides of a spectacle that balances between beauty and ugliness, ancient and modern, precious and decadent, punk and hairdresser, antic and the circus-like gigs. On the contrary the less he fights the more the sound is noisy, the images become more violent and the “fighter” is eventually knocked out. The public becomes actually the spectator of this peculiar boxing fight involving only one solitary spectator/player/boxer. Intravertie (a neologism of introverted and intra-muros) is a show especially created and performed for the 2005 young creation night. This 30 minutes spectacle creates the illusion of a party, taking place in a castle, by a video-projection of “festive activity” on the front windows of the castle. This project could only consist of another front-type (2d) projection, but its real depth and its outline is revealed this time by a main character: the electricity Fairy. At the beginning, this creature sticks out of the audience, walks towards the castle, unlocks it and welcomes the people at the party. Thus the fairy creates a connection,a bond and maintains the illusion of a real party going on in the castle. Then, when the deception is obvious, she steps outside in front of the audience, and she performs a song. As she sings, various white lights start to shine on the facade of the castle. Thanks to her interactive microphone, the electricity fairy is the actual link between the chateau and the public. The projectors are installed inside the shop and images are projected only during the night. When pedestrians walk by the window, motion detecting software sets the videos (showing actually people passing by, attracted and stopping by the windowcase) to play. I call this an intimate urban project. What is normally outside is now reflected from the inside but still remains the object of attraction and interaction for those who are outside. This digital and interactive project was meant to invite the audience to plunge into another reality - not the dreaming dimension but the dreamlike one, the time of questioning. INSIDE would set its own rhythm, it had a breath of its own. The works displayed were shaped in a continuous loop, autonomous, so “death” or “ending” would not belong to the show. It had been alive before the tour and it would still live after.Thus, the relative peace of the exhibition coupled to the visitor’s silence would deepen the immersion into that timeless world. The swaying of the showings, the combination of their shimmers and shadings, responding to the playing lights of the tv-monitors, blurred the relief of the walls, which were floating as if animated ; the muffled calls would drag down the onlooker even more deeply into their womb. Inside that house, into these rooms, we would guess the inner land of a self. The shutting away was not physical but psychic. A reclusion where the only and blind window leading into the outside world was a video screen, where the last room, hoped for like an escape route, was no more than a dead end. A dead end wich would work as a pendulum in full retroaction, driving the visitor back into the maze of the exhibition. A survivor’s pleasure would be found in the pure fact of leaving those dark areas to reach for the sunlight, flowing through the glass veranda of the entrance hall. The day was not over, death had not walked in ; the visitor was back into the whispering world of the living. That crossing had merely been a digression in time, an introspective flash. The eerie atmosphere of that performance was imbued with classical romanticism and existential spleen all along, wihile being provided with a different processing through the multimedia application. INSIDE was designed into and for the Villa de Bank ; the pieces of work exposed were indivisible at their core. Their relocation in a new Villa would alter their singular quality ; the best evolution would consist in developping an original exhibition, with a fresh play unfolding in brand new rooms. I would try to put some timing deep to my interactive schemas ; to talk about the timing print, the space memory, the dust, the walls, its inhabitants, its ghosts. Maybe create a monster. The real and fictive passing time will alter the project’s aspect and interactivity. But keeping the romantic and poetic view into the numeric and interactive representation. Programming : Stéphane Bachelier 2 webcams Streams / VLC + Pure-Data / Chroma key / Streaming live on Http: This project is about a virtual journey of two real adventurers : Donald Abad and Thierry Marceau. The first in France and the second in Québec lived in a basement , alone, during 7 days&nights. However this is not a limit . Together they hit the road and accomplished their travel through their Internet connexion. In their underground studio, the two separate adventurers were placed on a video blue-screen (chroma key), and were recorded constantly by a webcam. These two video flux were associated - on realtime - only on an Internet webpage, in a streaming video. The «fake» background and the «hors-champ» were only visible by the visitors of the exhibition, through a videosurveillance screen. (see schema above). The websurfer was able to watch a video showing the two «adventurers», wearing explorer’s clothes, nomad equipment, trekking tent and food. The vocabulary, the movements, the conversation were the ones of journeymen. The idea of this performance is to question the concept of the «still voyager» («le voyageur immobile» by G. Deleuze) with some settings similar to the prison jail ones (underground, no natural but only artificial light,…). How to feel free, how to dream about horizons, how to get hope to go further? And where to go? Because the two explorers couldn’t talk or be connected to someone else, they will live «together» night&day. We tried to identify and symbolize what is an electronic (not only «virtual») relationship, what is a social network. The journey was a metaphor of these virtual agora, countries, and universe. Through these extreme settings, and with some powerful situations, truth, hopes, friendship, dreams or the abandonment, renunciation, paranoia, all was revealed in their real scale. The one to find the perfect gesture, to find THE move. The (sound) adventurer is the sound transmitter, but he is particularly the actuator. By his steady-stream movement searching, will be streamed, broadcasted and guessed the original electric Drone-sound. But, it needed to input an human breath, an heartbeat, a rhythm, but activated like a motor unit: to link symbolically gesture and walk, but trying to keep them independents, biomechanicly. The gesture is sharp, tonic, it launches the sound, extend it, it cuts, it hits, breaks, hacks, it shows the direction to go through. That drone is in total adequacy with the idea of the exploration of unknowns’ territories or to precise. The (musical) track is not inscribed, but, at least, you can hear and follow the sound-signal. But every quest, every territory, has its limits. The energy, the autonomy, are temporary? The electronic cricket that it’s blasting its signal, sensor fixed on its arm like an injury, attached by a wire to its dispositif, hampered in its walk by the awkward message, is not eternal. The quest will be ended by the possibility of liberation of the human-actuator: The exhaustion, the empty batteries, the transmitting-prothesis’ unballasting, the wire’ lifting, the hurt, many scenarios are possible. What between the system or the user will exhaust the other first? By the way of a performative vision, I’d like to think that I will deplete and exhaust the Machine, to its destruction, and at least to keep it under control.
